About the Port of Houston
Port of Houston is a deep-water port in Houston, Texas, that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. It has been around for almost one-hundred years. When Houston was a new city, residents saw the need for a better ship channel than what the city was currently using. It took two years to complete and the city took part in great celebrations when it was finally finished. These days, Port of Houston is one of the busiest ports world-wide and is place of international trade for the United States.
At the port, visitors can see many factories and refineries that are still in business, including ExxonMobil’s Baytown Refinery, which is the largest refinery in the United States. There are also many ships docked and passing through the port. Just standing near the port gives people a glimpse of all the work that is going on.
Port of Houston offers a free boat tour everyday. This ninety-minute tour takes passengers up and down the port where they will see the refineries and plants hard at work. Those on the boat tour may also see a foreign ship or two as they travel along the port.
Near Port of Houston, visitors will find many other attractions are several museums, including the Children’s Museum of Houston which offers hands-on fun just for the kids. The Houston Downtown Aquarium is just a few miles from Port of Houston and gives visitors the opportunities to see many kinds of marine life.
